Because this is shoreline ice (as opposed to riverbank ice), a fair bit of sediment is mixed into it. On a shoreline as large as Lake Ontario's, the waves and wind trap water as it freezes upon exposure to the colder air, encapsulating and suspending sand particles which give the ice a unique quality. firstname.lastname@example.org
