Voted, nice HDR
Barney, I found a forum post where you discussed using PhotoMatix. I'm currently experimenting with the trial version. I hoped to ask you a question using this photo as an example. Do you find the need to further process the PhotoMatix image any further in PhotoShop (or other programs), or does PhotoMatix produce an image of acceptable quality? Also, in your experience, do you have a preference between the Details Enhancer or the Tone Compressor feature of tone mapping?
I seem to get the best results using the Detail Enhancer, but on occasion the Tone Compressor is more effective, but not often, for me at least. All I try to do in PM is get the light-range to my liking* & then I generally 'finish' the image in other software such as Aperture for the colour, contrast & sharpening. I only use PS to remove dust spots or lens flair etc.
*I'll always use the (Light) smoothing at 100% on the Tone Compressor. I'm not a fan of the 'typical' HDRi images which tend to look very stylised and unnatural, I attempt to achieve a result thats closer to the memory of what the scene actually looked like at the time. Not sure if I achieve that tho!
I hope this helps. Please let me know if I can help any further.
Barney, just one little correction. A photo in JPEG format like shown here cannot be HDR since JPEG is a LDR format ;)
It should be named "derived from HDR" or "tone mapped from HDR" and not just "HDR".
Thank you for your visit in my gallery,
