Runway 17 and hangars at Vashon Municipal Airport (2S1) 1/16/10
Nice shot. Is a grass runway with a lil piece of pav?
Yes, it's a grass runway with a short piece of pavement. The pavement is for two purposes. Primarily it is a spot to run up your engine prior to takeoff. With your foot firmly on the brakes you increased the propeller speed to about 1800 rpm to make sure it can develop full power and to check your magnetos and carburetor heat. If you do this on bare soil you run the risk of kicking up small stones which can damage your propeller. So a nice bare patch of pavement is preferred for this procedure. Secondly, the pavement is a nice solid touchdown zone that will not get soft and muddy in the Puget Sound rainy season (September through July).
Thank You Mr. Rogers for your explanation, it must be an amazing and beautiful place in summer time.
