What a great capture, Billy! You took this photo just at the right time. I like herons and also have some photos in my gallery. Greetings, Anne

Thanks a lot Anne. i had been taking shots for a few minutes when I got lucky.

I've just had a look at your heron shots & enjoyed them very much. That is a really beautiful park they were in.

Greetings Billy, I bet this photograph angers many pond owners who have seen their prized Koi cleaned out by the kingfisher and heron families. We have many friends who have fishless water features. They are wonderful birds to see. Imagine watching your favorite Nemo turn into lunch ;)

Cheers,

Rich

The funny thing about this is that there are always a few fishermen at this loch but you never see them catch anything!

a great picture of inner city loch wildlife,a great shot.40 years i`ve been going to "the huggy loch",never seen anything like it,maybe next time.

Billy B@rk, on December 11, 2007, said:

Cheers mabbozza. I've only seen herons here over the last 5 or 6 years. I've never seen more than 2 at any one time. They are very shy birds and don't usually let you watch them for long. Do you know the small stream that runs into the loch, near the swing park? I see one in there most mornings.

PS I think I'll put Huggy as a tag!

Thanks for pointing me to this one, it's a well-timed shot.

I was in Alnmouth last September, and got some shots of a great blue heron in the estuary. I posted one - it's on the first page of my pictures. I haven't figured out how to link pictures to comments yet, but I will!

Regards, Paul

Incredible catch, Billy! You are right, it takes being in the right place at the right time, but isn't it wonderful to be sitting there waiting when something like this happens, and you're ready?! Do you know what kind of heron he is? We only usually see Great Blues out here, and this one has very beautiful pale cream colors and seems lighter overall than a Great Blue. Thank you for directing me to this! Greetings from alicia

Billy B@rk, on June 17, 2008, said:

Hi Alicia. Thanks for your nice comment. Sorry I don't know what kind of heron this is but I will try to find out. :)

Coal Miner's Boy, on June 18, 2008, said:

Alicia and Billy - this is a Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea). They are by far the most common in the UK - sort of like our Great Blue Heron in this country.

You can see my shot of a Grey in Alnmouth harbour HERE

Regards,

Paul

Billy B@rk, on June 18, 2008, said:

Thanks for that Paul. :)

aisavery, on June 18, 2008, said:

Yes, thank you, Paul, for clarifying. I will look them up. I think I like the coloring on the Grey better, but then, maybe grass is always greener because it's different.... - ?

Best to you both, alicia

Good shot Billy, I'm amazed at the size of these birds. They must devour a great deal of fish. I've noticed more Herons this year than in any previous years. Regards, Anita

Billy B@rk, on December 22, 2008, said:

Thanks Anita. I love the patience of these birds as they wait to strike. :)

Wow, what a great action shot Billy! It's a bit of a pity that it's so noisy at full-size but the subject matter is absolutely sublime.

Cheers, Tomas

Billy B@rk, on February 9, said:

Thanks Tomas. I cropped this shot down quite a lot so the quality has suffered a bit. :)
