Munneswaram Kovil, according to folk lore is said to have been in existance since the days of King Rawana thus is over 2000 years old. It is also recorded that in the year 1448 AD King Parakkramabahu VI renovated the Kovil. Many parts of the complex has under gone renovations from time to time. Yet, the Maha Vishnu Kovil (within the complex) constructed in granite (rock) is well preserved in it's original form.
It is also said that King Rama on his way to to battle withKing Rawana, stopped at this kovil to worship.
