Elk thistle - Cirsium foliosum. It's just been this year I noticed how photogenic they are. Here and here are two more photos of them. They sort of remind me of Teddy Bear Cholla in the southwest. I don't know how often I've seen something I've thought was a coyote or wolf sitting way off in the distance, and had it turn into an elk thistle through binos.
