I was attracted by the geometry and number in this shot brought out by the simplifying nature of the snow. One road, two pavements, three objects. One lamppost, two drains, three areas of snow.

Presently one of the editor's choices in the street category for digital photographer of the year 2007. :)

See my complete fine art collection on www.highton-ridley.co.uk and my stock photos on www.photoready.co.uk

Rafael (Retrocool), on July 9, 2007, said:

Great photo! Spot on with the geometry ... but its more than that. Even though the picture ends, I still follow the tracks of the tires from one end to another and just imagine myself on this street somehow, somewhere.

highton-ridley, on July 9, 2007, said:

Thanks for the props, Retrocool. What was weird about it but I couldn't capture in the image was that this is a short service road to a delivery entrance to the hotel I was staying at (shot taken from room window). So, even though it had a street lamp and pavements, it just wasn't a place for people on foot.

How interesting that is.... funny how things work out like that...

Brilliant: two points, a straight line and one curve in black, and the rest in almost pure white. Good eye, highton-ridley. If it is allowed me, yellow star.

Hey Retrocool, did you choose any images yet for the photo competition?

Vasco Pires, on July 19, 2007, said:

I love this shot!! So simply eyt so amazing!!

Are you guys entering a photo competition? thats great!

highton-ridley, on July 19, 2007, said:

Hi Vasco, see my very first comment on this image, you'll see what we were discussing. Last comment from Retrocool was that he couldn't decide which ones to enter.

How 'bout you? Some of your shots should be entered too... easy as pie.. just choose some .. lol.. always the difficult bit!

Vasco Pires, on July 19, 2007, said:

Hi Highton! I guess I will enter also! Altough it's just for fun really, I don't think I have material even to the editor's choice, let alone to win anything...

I wondered a little through the categories and saw amazing photographs!! Your's included!

Could you help me on a little detail? I don't have a clue about the photo info of my shots. Is there a way for me to read the EXIF of my photos?

highton-ridley, on July 19, 2007, said:

Hi Vasco.. you can read EXIF info in Google's free picasa s/w or you could maybe try this freeware http://www.takenet.or.jp/~ryuuji/minisoft/exifread/english/

I've not tried it but it seems that it will do the job...

Cheers :)

Vasco Pires, on July 19, 2007, said:

Thanks for the link.. It really solves the problem!

Cheers

Hey Vasco, did you enter the competition yet?

Vasco Pires, on July 21, 2007, said:

I've been trying to upload my photos in the last 2 days but their server is down all the time...

Hey Highton, can I ask you something? How does a professional photographer like you, who probably invests time and money in your own site to advirtise and so on, deals with the fact that your photos on that contest can be downloaded by anyone?

I will put this in other words: Imagine that I would like your photos so bad that I was willing to pay to have them hanged in my walls. That's the whole idea behind selling right?

But since I could easily download them from the photo contest and print them myself, and even credit them as mine. Wouldn't that be prejudicial to you? You would loose potential money right? Of course that I personally woudn't do that because I rule myself by high ethical values. But I imagine that there are lots of people around the world that would do that without a blink. Worse yet, someone could even sell them as their own.

Pardon me for taking so much of your time but I just wanted to know how a professional like you deal with those matters?

Regards

Vasco Pires, on July 21, 2007, said:

Ok, I found out what the problem was! I was trying to upload photos using mozilla firefox, It wasn't working. I tryied with Windows IE and it worked. I uploaded two so far, I will probably upload a few more, but not many, I really don't have enough quality photos to fill, not only one category! I could fill them all with great nude portraits I've made, but the models wouldn't agree... :(

highton-ridley, on July 22, 2007, said:

Hi Vasco, to answer your question about people stealing my photos...

There's not really a lot you can do about it apart from submitting lower resolution images (like I do here). It's one of those situations where you have to balance between publicising your work and potentially having it pinched.

At least no-one can dispute the copyright - by submitting to respected competitions you definitively establish it as yours.

You can embed invisible watermarks in your images but that doesn't stop people nicking them. Another thing that helps a little is making images only available as signed, limited edition prints.

If someone does start to go big style on abusing your copyright and it comes to you attention, then you go through the courts.

If you're making serious money with your images, there are services around where you can register your images. They then do automatic searches across the internet looking for the images they protect and notify you of any potential abuse they find.

..

And I'm glad you sorted out the uploading... I'm now off to have a look at your piccies.. oh, what categories did you submit to?

Vasco Pires, on July 22, 2007, said:

Hi highton! thanks for the info, not that I want to enter the business. But I like to hear about other aspects of people's professional issues.

I've uploaded 6 so far, it's easy to find them, just go to landscapes or portraits, in the 2nd or 3rd screen you'll find one, after that it's easy.

highton-ridley, on July 22, 2007, said:

Hey, Vasco, nice selection you've uploaded. I think you need to enter the mono version of your cane shot, though. ..and I dropped some votes on your piccies :)

Vasco Pires, on July 22, 2007, said:

Thanks Highton! I still have to upload two or three more, including the one you mention. I really don't have any more 'good enough' material to upload...

Anyway! even my best shots are just mediocre when compared to what I've seen there so far.

Thanks for the votes. I've retributed! Do you have any more images in the editor's choice?

highton-ridley, on July 22, 2007, said:

Cool Vasco, I don't mind to help out a bit :) Hey, don't put yourself down, you've got plenty of great shots - I hope that the mono cat with the missing tooth is one of the others you're gonna enter.

Vasco Pires, on July 22, 2007, said:

As a matter of fact I wasn't thinking in that one... But since you mention it.. I probably will now. After all you know more about this art than I do!

Thanks

Do you know if Rafael have uploaded any photos already?

Brillant composition!

Interesting which things (normally completely unregarded) get popular when the ground is covered with a thin blanket of snow!

rimendez, on May 3, 2008, said:

Mr. "hudsonkd", you are wrong. Maybe this photo might have been anywhere, but never, never in your imagination or in your nonexistent creativity.

I suggest you to create something before to offense a beautiful job like this.

Rafael (Retrocool), on May 3, 2008, said:

rimendez everyone is entitled to their own opinions, can't please everyone all of the time. I am sure there are photos of mine people do not like at all. hudsondk chose to make his point.

If we agree or not with his statement, as artists & photographers, criticism comes with the territory, bad or good.

Obviously people do like this photo, proof within the comments he has received. Yes, the photo could have been shot anywhere, but the point of this photo is more so of the geometry highton had kindly pointed out.

It is up to the viewer to take what they can get out of.

Now for the fact this person has no photos himself, always worries me ...

rimendez, on May 4, 2008, said:

Rafael: I'm agreeing with you in the sense that the jobs of each one are not necessarily good for all people. Nevertheless, ones can expose his opinion with respect and prudence. Then, the criticism is constructive and positive without caring if it is favorable or unfavorable. But this person doesn't do that. It bothered me their pejorative comment and their inadequate opinion. Is it important where was the photo taken? That observation is not reasonable in order to value the quality of a job.

Maybe, my words aren't the more polite words; I accept that; I'm sorry and I apologize with you. But, this was a reaction against the ugly attitude of hundsok.

For me, this point is over with this comment.

Rafael (Retrocool), on May 4, 2008, said:

HAHA, don't get me wrong, his choice of words were lacking any sort of constructive criticism and I can easily blame that on numerous reasonings behind his unintellegent response without offering an advice or a reasoning behind his construed answer...

And I agree with you whole heartedly as it does get under my skin as well, that people with these notorious comments have no real meaning behind there answers and this is why, I choose to ignore such a blatant, boring, unintellegent, idiotic and yet ignorant comment that he/she made...

No apologies needed btw... but thanks for the thought.

highton-ridley, on May 5, 2008, said:

Thankyou for coming to my photo's defense Rimendez and Rafael. I think it was the object of a drive-by shooting ;-)

highton-ridley, on November 4, 2008, said:

Thanks Andreas - but I'm not sure where the "motion" is that you mention? Maybe it's poor translation software. In english, motion=movement, if that helps.

© Andrea Salvi, on November 4, 2008, said:

No No :) i really mean movement... the curve from low right to mid left, and finnaly, to top right "let" me see a movement, in poor words is like if i see the cars run on the road ;) maybe it look strange to say, but is what i feel ;) well done!! greetings from Italy!

highton-ridley, on November 5, 2008, said:
