I think this gull didn't want to be photographed, Bits. He behaves in the same way as I do when I don't want to be photographed.

LOL, no, while I also have that reaction to a camera, can't give the gull that excuse. He's pushing the scoter underwater here! About the only excuse I can come up with is that maybe he's nearly blind, and thought the scoter was food. Did it again when the scoter re-surfaced, too. But at least after that, the scoter stayed under for quite a while and came up a good distance away. So the gull attacked a different bird.....

Ah. The gull went berserk by the ugly appearance of the Scoter. Or the gull must have been very hungry if he wanted to prey on America's ugliest bird.

great capture bits but are they getting camera shy up there apart from the ugly ones. steve

Great action shot Bits

Thanks Norrel, Steve, and Dianne! I guess gulls just have it in for scoters, or they've found out they can easily steal their food. I watched another gull divebomb another scoter up at Plum Island today and steal the crab it had caught.

And Norrel - obviously gulls wouldn't mind eating the ugliest bird in North America - look at the other stuff they are willing to eat!

Hey Bits, there is another explanation: He's nearly blind like you say, but he's holding it down so he can mate with it.

LOL, well, with all the courtship dances going on out there in the harbor these days, that could be it. But boy we'd sure end up with a REALLY ugly bird then!

Well, even though I don't much care for the gulls, this on makes a rather pretty abstract shape with his hatred.

Bits-n-Pieces on February 17, 2010

Thanks n1w! And he stayed there for a good long while - I clicked off 3 shots similar to this one. And lol, I guess if you don't like gulls, this is maybe the best view of them you could imagine!

Hmmmm..Let me guess. He didn't like how he looked and decided to end it all....or...there is a White-Winged Scoter beneath him!

Narcissus of the bird crowd?

Bits-n-Pieces on February 18, 2010

More the Eddie Haskell!

Hi Liam - you got it on the second guess. He was pushing the scoter underwater. Well, or when he bombed the scoter, the scoter dived and the gull was still trying to get his food.
