I am an old Malaccan who left the place for India in November 1946.As a student of BHES my house was Famosa, and at age 77 I retain fond memories of this historic monument. The Malacca High School which I left after passing my 7th Std had it as its emblem. Located at the junction of Old Banda Hilir and Fort roads it had a low pillared thick Iron spiked chain boundary barrier which we boys used to cross and sit on the brass cannon to pose for Brownie Box camera snaps. My father who worked for the War Tax Dept had his office further down the road in front of the Malacca Volunteer Corps building adjoining to the road leading to St Pauls Hill.Another imposing building was that of the Honkong &Shanghai Bank in front of which Japanese aerial bombing created a huge crater during WW2.The clock tower,Malacca River,"StadtHouse" with the Dutch church converted as English Church and the shops on the Riverside Rd esp Peter Chong's where we used to buy books and stationery and Lim Bros for toys and Knick knacks is still green in my memory.Thank you very much to allow me to add these comments which brings back a tinge of nostalgia.regards,Kesavachandran

You are most welcome, thank you for interesting commentary. You known, Malacca was recently added as a World Heritage Site. It is no surprise considering its history and beautifully preserved architecture.

To satisfy my nostalgia visited Malacca (Melaka) in February2010.Despite much development the Historical sites are kept intact and well maintained. It is no longer the quiet old place it used to be 60 odd years back,Melaka now appears to be a major tourist spot, as a World Heritage Site.
