Hi Jeff,
East Coast area of Singapore was the first upper class residential area of Singapore. Many of these older shop houses have been preserved as heritage buildings.
Of course, East Coast Road is no longer on the coast. With reclaimation, It is at least 1 km away from the coast, as you can see on the map.

Singapore is always tidy. That's the thing Thailand always lacks.

Hi Ah-Pong:
We used to be quite dirty years ago, when I was still a student. But "Uncle Lee" decreed that Singapore has to be clean. So after many years of cleaning, educating and punishing by fines, now we are clean. But still take a lot of effort to keep clean.
I remembered teaching my children to keep wraping for snack in their pocket, until they can find a proper rubbish can to throw away.
I believe Thailand can do the same also.

As I have said just now in this photo of yours (http://www.panoramio.com/photo/32858689) that Thailand has always lacked visionary leadership Singapore enjoys. The country looks very fractured.
