The monument in the middle is known as 'Edinburgh's Disgrace' because it was never completed as people didn't subscribe enough money. The tall column has a white ball in the top which drops each day at midday to let the ships on the River Forth know the time and the small building on the left with the dome is the Observatory.

Richiee, on September 15, 2008, said:

The tall column is Nelson‘s Monument, commemorating his victory at Trafalgar. The ball at the top drops at 1pm every day, except Sunday, coinciding with the firing of the One O'Clock Gun from Edinburgh Castle.
