'There are many remarkable and worthwhile sights in Babylon but not least admirable is the enormous amount of bitumen which it produces; so plentiful is its supply that not only suffices to finish the great number and size of the buildings, but it is also collected in unrestricted amounts by the people and, after dried, it is burnt instead of wood. And even though countless people collect it, the amount remains unchanged as if derived from some limitless spring.' From Diodorus of Sicily. Library of History. Book 2:12.
