Chip, they are a wood boring beetle. They feed mostly on dead wood, but will also attack some live timber, so they've got a good set of jaws. They won't bite if they just land on you, but if you pick one up the wrong way, I'm sure you might get bitten in self-defense!

Thank you Vasco! The background was a complete accident. After the beetle landed on me and I brushed him off, he flew onto my truck and I decided to take a photo of him. I did try several angles to get the most interesting photo I could. I am happy you like it :).
