A portion of the present Interlochen State Park was subdivided before 1917 and lots were offered for sale. The depot was to service patrons of the nearby Hotel Pennington and future cottage owners. WWI stopped sales and the property was pruchased by Willis Pennington who convinced the state to purchase it for a state park.
