Thanks Michael. In the winter the Sand Mountain seems to be fairly deserted and beautiful. In the summer I'm not sure. It's quite a trek to the top, given that the campground where you start is at an altitude of 4085 ft (according to G-E), and it's two steps up and one back. But I was determined to do it. In G-E its terrain is well modeled. You ought to try viewing it obliquely.

Thanks N1w: And for your comments on the other photos as well. Yes, it was a trip (you can tell what era I'm from) walking along the top of the dune once I'd struggled up there. I really enjoyed that hike. Sand dunes all over the world have a facination for people because of their surrealistic quality, I think. That's why you see all those pictures of camel caravans plodding across the horizon in movies and ads.
