Almost all sugar refineries in Brazil now produce bio-ethanol as well. A tall building of distillation towers and storing tanks for bio-ethanol are seen in the left half of the photo. ウジーナUsinaは工場を意味する一般名詞であるが、ブラジル、とくにノルデステ（北東部地方）では、単にウジーナと言えば製糖工場を指すことが多い。ブラジルのほとんどの製糖工場は、今日、砂糖のほかにバイオエタノールを生産している。写真はアラゴアス州南部に1973年に創立された比較的新しいウジーナで、タブレーロス台地（後方）を刻む谷底に立地している。サトウキビ畑はおもにこの台地の上にひろがっているID: 3284368が、砂質で養分に乏しい土壌のため、2009年現在、工場の生産能力の80％程度のサトウキビしか集められないという。工場の左の部分がエタノール製造部門で、背の高い蒸留塔棟と貯蔵タンク群が見える。雨季が到来した3月初旬、工場はすでに半年にわたる操業休止期に入ったため、煙突の煙は消え構内は閑散としている。2007年3月3日、テオトニオヴィレーラ市にて撮影。
