The tower was built in 1933 by Robert Ilg as a water tower, to allow rapid water changes to the two outdoor public swimming pools. Changing water was done in lieu of pool filtration.
In the mid '60's when the YMCA was built, the tower had a gift shop on the 1st floor and a candy shop on the 2nd floor. The interior of these shops was at the same angle as the tower, but all the shelving was level, causing an optical illusion that the shelves were leaning. My dad and his friend built the shelving as volunteers in the early days of this YMCA.
