Still intact from the middle ages. A gargoyle door knocker at Durham Cathedral, Durham, England. It was the knocker used by the seeker of "sanctuary", alerting the clergy inside the church to open the great door.

The use of sanctuary probably has its most modern fame in Victor Hugo's novel, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The word is put to good use by actor Charles Laughton, playing the hunchback, as he swings down on a rope affixed to the cathedral to grab a girl about to be put to death. The momentum continues to propel the girl and him from the street level into a cathedral belfry, where he cries out "Sanctuary, Sancyuary !"
