I like this one, Brad! :-))
Are you a pilot?
Greetings from Switzerland, May
I'm just an aviation buff.
This photo was taken at a small grass strip near St. Louis, MO. My uncle used to tow banners from this field.
One of these days I'm going to see if I can beg/borrow/steal that sign....
Good luck then, Brad! ;-))
I would do the same, if I was you…
I have just stolen it from you for my favourite collection with a yellow star… ;-))
This is from King Airport. It was closed when the highway was raised for a flyover ramp. The FAA said the runway was too short. I have video of airplanes taking off from King Airport getting ready to tow banners if you are interested. The video is from around 1972 or 73.
stlmusic: You have NO IDEA how much I would love to see that video! There is a pretty good chance the pilot is my uncle!
My uncle still lives at King, but no longer flies. When the highway was built, it interfered with the approach clearances. They could have move the threshold for that runway, but that would have made it too short. The opposite runway would still work just fine, but I guess they decided to close the field than to adjust the runway configuration.
On my last visit down there (when this picture was taken) there were still about a half dozen planes (that I saw) based there, but none that were airworthy at the time.
I will make a WMV of that video. It's not very long but it's probably at least 30 seconds worth. The video was taken by my father who use to fly his Volksplane from that airport. Originally he would trailer the airplane in but eventually he had a hanger there. I remember when the EAA chapter use to be based there before moving to Sackman airport. My music teacher also was a pilot and had and airplane based at King. The airplane had a big stuffed Snoopy sitting in the seat. (I have the Volksplane video YouTubed linked through Google Earth and it's located at King since that's where the majority of the film was taken)
I'd be interested in seeing any/all King videos you have. You can send links to bradc314 (at) gmail.com. Also, send me your father's name, and I'll mention it to my uncle!
I just posted the video on YouTube and linked it to Google Earth as well. So if it's not within the Google Earth layer by the time you look for the video, you could also visit http://www.youtube.com/stlmusic and you can find the video labeled "King Airport"
