The sign on the present Black Boy depicts a chimney sweep, but the Inn dates back to the 17C and many are named after Charles II.

His mother Henrietta Maria, wife of Charles I, was of continental origin and at his birth he had a dark complexion, earning him the nickname The Black Boy.
