'And this story is told that does not seem unbelievable to me. Alexander wishing to leave the architects outlines of the fortification but had no means to mark the ground, one of the architects had a thought of collecting the meal which the soldiers carried with them and mark the grounds wherever the king indicated. And so was drawn the circle for the walls that surrounded the city. The soohtsayers, and mostly Aristandros the Telmissean, who made many correct prophesies, reflecting upon this, said that the city would be well off in everything, but in the fruits of the earth in particular.' From Arrian's Anabasis of Alexander. Book 3:2(1-2).

'They say that after conquering Egypt, he wanted to found a large and populous Greek city that would bear his name, and it was the opinion of the architects to measure and draw a circle of certain parcel of land. And while he was asleep at night he had a remarkable vision. A man with hair-locks and of a venerable aspect appeared standing by him and saying the following: "There is an island in the much-dashing sea, in front of Egypt. They call it Pharos." Immediately, he rose up and went to Pharos, which at that time was still an island, a little over the Canobic mouth (of the Nile), but now connected with the mainland with an earth road." From Plutarch's Lives. Alexander. 16:2-3.
