The Cylburn Mansion was built by businessman Jesse Tyson between 1863 and 1888. It became a wildflower preserve in 1954. In the 1960s greenhouses were built to grow plants for city parks. The grounds have been an arboretum since 1982. The grounds were refurbished extensively in 2009 and a new visitors center was added.

The day before Mother's Day is the customary date for the annual Cylburn Market Day, at which the city greenhouses and local garden clubs sell plants, bulbs, and trees. Best to get there early for the greatest selection.
