Kinnity Castle was built in 1630 by William O'Carroll and was confiscated in 1641 by the English forces as part of the plantation of Offaly. In 1811 Lady Catherine Hutchinson commissioned the famous architects of Dromoland Castle and Adare Manor - the Pain Brothers - to extend the castle to what Kinnitty Castle is today, a gem of neo-gothic architecture. Kinnity Castle was burned by Republican forces in 1922 but was rebuilt in 1928.

It is nowadays a Hotel. I stayed there for a couple days in 1999, and it's an interesting place. Food and lodging was good. I have some memorable moments about this stay. What a coincidence, my father was born in 1922.

I wish I could visit Ireland without baggage that was uncalled for.
