Actually, Caveman, Augusta is not a great city...at all...It's not pretty as it is often portrayed in the Masters. South Augusta is a DUMP. And there are places in Augusta that make you seem like you've gone back in time to the early 1900s. Lotsa crime. The prettiest place in Augusta, that I remember is Phinizy Swamp Nature Park. It's a great place for nature photography. You can see Herons, Egrets, Snakes, Turtles, Lizards, Spiders, and if you're lucky enough, you can find Black-Bellied Whistling-Ducks and Painted Buntings. In Winter it's a great place for waterfowl watching. You can see hundreds of ducks gathered together.

Of course, the second best place for birding is Merry Brothers Brickyard Ponds. It's a fantastic place for Waterfowl watching. Thousands of waterfowl winter here including, Ring-Necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Hooded Merganser, Ruddy Duck, Northern Shoveler, Blue-Winged Teal, Horned Grebe, Common Loon and more (even a few Tundra Swans and Long-Tailed Ducks have been seen). In Summer/Spring it's also a great place for birding with birds like Green Herons and Swallows and much more. I have not actually been there, but I've passed over it many times on I-520.

There are also places like the Savannah Rapids and the Augusta Canal, but I have never been there.

Savannah is a great town!! I love it!

Charleston, I ain't never been there....but I heard there's a great raptor rehab center there.

Some great places for nature photography/birding on the GA/SC coast are

Jekyll Island, GA - Great place with Roseate Spoonbills.

Pickney Island NWR, SC - a fantastic place for birding. Stay tuned and I'll have some pics of that place.

Best Wishes

Fantastic scene ! BO Do you have pics from the golf course? Friendly from France, Fernand

((Ospr3y)) on May 23, 2010

Thanks Mario and Fernand!

No, Fernand, I do not have any of the golf course, because

  • I have never been to a gold course in my life
  • I am not sure if I am allowed
  • I am not really into golf. I like Tennis, which reminds me that the French Open starts today.

However, I hope I can get photos soon, as I have heard it's really a beautiful place!

Best Wishes!
