The Saga Pearl II leaving Dover Harbour and entering the Straits of Dover and English Channel through the Western Entrance at 4.48 pm on Friday, 14th of May, 2010. The Western Entrance lies between the Admiralty Pier on the right, and the out-of-shot Southern Breakwater to the left.

Earlier, the Saga Pearl II had been berthed at CT1 (Cruise Terminal 1) alongside the Admiralty Pier (also see the MS Saga Pearl II berthing at CT1 photo).

The photo was taken from the lighthouse end of the Prince of Wales Pier. The lighthouse in the photo itself is the Admiralty Pier Light (built 1908; cast iron tower 72 feet high; white flash every 7.5 seconds).

There's an oil tanker on the horizon to the left of the ship and a faint reflection from the cliffs of France on the right.

The MS Saga Pearl II is beginning a 15-nights "Gems of the Baltic" cruise calling at Copenhagen (Denmark, via the Kiel Canal), Travemünde (Germany), Stockholm (Sweden), Helsinki (Finland), St. Petersburg (Russia), Tallinn (Estonia), Visby (Sweden), Klaipeda (Lithuania), Glydnia (Poland), and Rønne (Denmark). The cruise ship will return to Dover (via the Kiel Canal) on Saturday, May 29th.

The ship had previously sailed from Southampton on the 4th of May and had called at Fawley and the Norwegian ports of Stavanger, Floro (Florø), Kristiansund, Aalesund (Ålesund), and Bergen before arriving in Dover.

The MS Saga Pearl II was previously known as the Astoria and has been operating for more than 28 years, making cruises world wide. The Astoria had a sister-ship (MS Astor) and both were operated by Transocean Tours until August, 2009, when Saga Cruises made a successful a bid for the Astoria at auction. (1)

In late 2009, the ship sailed to Swansea, Wales where she underwent a £20 million three-month refit in the re-opened Swansea dry dock. She sailed on her first cruise as Saga Pearl II on 15th March 2010 to the Norwegian Fjords. (1)
