I am afraid that the buildings in Yemen are not well maintained and a lot of them will fall down. Someone told me that the beautiful houses along the sea front of Hodeidah are disappearing rapidly. What can we do about that?

They don't maintain them? So who has title? There would seem to be a whole row of them together - no homeowners association to care for common elements?
How old are the buildings? Which century were they build in?
Wonderful pictures ... taken before 9/11/01?

There was an international campaign to safeguard the old city of Sana'a in the early nineties from Gophcy - UNDP-Unesco. A number of traditional buildings were restored. Between 2000 and 2010 the city walls have been restored, as well as some gardens. Most of the streets are now paved and there is street lighting and street name signs. In 2008, the SFD started to restore the great mosque. Some traditional buildings have, however, crumbled to ruins, as some families prefer living in modern suburbian houses. The houses on the photograph are still there. The houses with the small round windows are medieval, these windows have thin translucent sheets of alabaster stone. At the moment there is, I think, no program to preserve endangered private houses.

Дома очень необычные, "пряничные" домики, как их называют. Сейчас здания и улицы в старом городе выглядят намного опрятнее, чем 13 лет назад.
