The MS AIDAcara passing through the Western Entrance of Dover Harbour into the Straits of Dover and English Channel. The Western Entrance lies between the Admiralty Pier on the right and the out-of-shot Southern Breakwater to the left.

The above photo was taken at 7.51 pm on Friday, 21st of May, 2010, from the lighthouse end of the Prince of Wales Pier. The lighthouse in the photo itself is the Admiralty Pier Light (built 1908; cast iron tower 72 feet high; white flash every 7.5 seconds).

Other photos of the ship taken this day are: MS AIDAcara arriving in Dover Harbour, MS AIDAcara berthing at CT1, and MS AIDAcara nearing the Western Entrance.

The MS AIDAcara is heading for Hamburg (Germany) prior to beginning a 4-days "German Bight Cruise" on the 23rd May calling at Oslo (Norway), Copenhagen (Denmark), and Kiel (Germany). The ship's last port of call had been Le Havre (France).

AIDAcara was built for Deutsche Seetouristik/Arkona Reisen, and was launched in 1996 under the name Das Clubschiff. When P and O Cruises purchased a controlling stake in Arkona Reisen, they transferred the ship out, operating her under the name Aida. The vessel became part of the new AIDA Cruises fleet, and was named AIDAcara after two of its sister ships entered operation, AIDAvita and AIDAaura. In 2005, the vessel underwent refits, which increased the number of cabins. (1) (2)

When in range of AIS, the vessel's current position is shown at:

MS AidaCara Cruise Ship

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and AIS Base stations. AIS information supplements marine radar, which continues to be the primary method of collision avoidance for water transport.
