Oh no, the stuff of nightmares, the Shipton Lift Bridge, my Nemesis. Two of us on a narrowboat, and I had to try to pull the thing down! I’m only 5' and weigh about 135lb, not enough to pull it down, and even with a backpack full of books my partner had to leap off the boat, tip it up, so I could get it down and then sit on it until he got back on the boat and get it through!

I've seen pictures of lift bridges propped open with some sort of pole while a boat passes under, but I can't work out how you'd get back on your boat after opening the bridge, since on this stretch at least you end up on the wrong side for the towpath !
