John Turner memorial stone

The text on the two sides of the stone reads:

HERE JOHN TURNER WAS CAST AWAY IN A HEAVY SNOW STORM IN THE NIGHT IN OR ABOUT THE YEAR 1755

THE PRINT OF A WOMANS SHOE WAS FOUND BY HIS SIDE WERE [sic] HE LAY DEAD

The stone is a replacement: the original is thought to have had the date 1735, and to refer to an inhabitant of nearby Saltersford Hall.
