Also illustrating a major cultural difference between Spain and the UK, in that with old buildings build in the pre-electric era, mains supply is applied to the outside of the building in Spain and to the inside of the building in the UK - generally up the main stair well from a panel in the basement, and thence through the interior brickwork on each floor.

"Moving out, Spanish-style? (just one possible underlying story - that way the van also makes sense)" Hmm... I don't think she'd be relaxing up against the railings in her day coat having a fag. She'd be chucking all his stuff out the window and screaming her head off, while he stands underneath trying to catch the breakables.... and all the neighbors would be looking out of their windows having a laugh and cheering them on.
