What was this yard for?

These are train stops. they act as chalks to stop cars from rolling off the end of the line.

I believe it was a "car-yard" for Ann Arbor Railroad. The line was largely used for lumber and ore hauling from 1895-1970's from northern Michigan/Wisconsin to Toledo, OH. It never carried passengers. Where the line terminated in Elberta, MI, a "train ferry" would ferry the cars across Lake Michigan to ports in U.P. Michigan and Wisconsin.
