Henry the Navigator was the third child of King John I of Portugal, the founder of the Aviz dynasty, and of Philippa of Lancaster, the daughter of John of Gaunt.
In 1387 John of Gaunt left his daughter Philippa to seal the Anglo-Portuguese Alliance made in the previous year, being the Treaty of Windsor.
This treaty is claimed to be the oldest alliance in the world which is still in force.
