Mavi Tavuskuşu

Anayurdu Hindistan ve Seylan ormanlarında yayılış gösterirler.

Tavus kuşu sülün ve hindi ailesinin en büyük üyesidir. Oyun kuşu olarak bilinirler. Rahatsız edildiğinde uçmaktan daha çok koşmayı tercih ederler ama gerektiğinde yuvarlak kanatlarıyla kısa mesafe uçabilirler.

Erkeklerinde görkemli telek tüyleri bulunur. Kuyruk örtü tüylerinden oluşan gösterişli telekler bronz renkli bir eğreltiye benzer. Ama uçlarında göz denen yuvarlak desenler vardır. Bu gözlerin ortasında, parlak maviyle çevrelenmiş siyah bir benek yer alır. Mavi halkayı da, kenarları yeşilimsi sarı olan bronz renkli bir dış halka sarar. Erkek dişiye çiftleşme zamanında gösteri yaparken kuyruğunu kaldırıp kuyruk örtü teleklerini yelpaze gibi açar ve titreştirir. Erkeğin tepesinde gene yelpaze biçimli, siyah ve mavimsi uçlu süs tüyleri bulunur. Başı ve boynu parlak mavi, sırtı yeşil üzerine siyah desenli, kanatları kahverengi nakışlı, alt bölümleri parlak koyu yeşil ve siyahtır. Yüzündeki tüysüz bölgelerden beyaz derisi görülür. Dişiler ise soluk renkli, gösterişsiz kuşlardır.

Soğuğa karşı oldukça dirençli yapıları sayesinde yeryüzünün birçok yerine götürülmüş, hayvanat bahçelerinin gözdesi olmuştur. Görünüşlerinin güzelliğine karşılık ötüşleri insanı irkiltecek ölçüde çirkindir.

Tavus kuşlarının dişisi yerdeki bir oyuğa genellikle beş tane kahverengimsi sarı yumur­ta bırakır. Kuluçkaya dişi yatsa da bu hayvanlarda yavruların yetiştirilmesinden erkek ve dişi ortaklaşa sorumludur.

Kısa ve dayanıklı gagalarının yanı sıra güçlü tırnakları ve dayanıklı ayakları, tanelerle birlikte yiyeceklerinin başlıca bölümü-oluşturan kökleri, tomurcukları eşelemeye ve böcekleri kurtları topraktan çıkarmaya çok elverişlidir. .......................................................................................................

Blue peacock

Breeds homeland in the forests of India and Ceylon.
