Built in 1836 by order of President Andrew Jackson, this lighthouse along with the lights of Eagle Island and Dice Head pointed the way into the mouth of the Penobscot River and beyond to the world's busiest lumber port. As many as 200 ships a day passed this lighthouse. The wood was used to build homes, businesses, bridges and fences in Boston and other cities along the US East Coast.
