A simple shot nicely done. This is one of my favorite style "foreground is really the main subject" shots. Cheers and regards, David

Thanks David. I am busy capturing some moods of my close environment in the city (like this small dam), while experimenting with settings etc. I'm still battling with DOF versus over-exposure - the smaller my lens aperture (e.g. f16) the more over-exposure I get. Cheers from Pretoria.

I actually have similar issues of slight over exposure at f16 with my EOS 400D(70mm~300mm for bird shots) & EOS 500D(18mm~135mm for all other shots). What I do is I set my Ev correction to -1/3 or -2/3 sometimes. I am still playing with it but as long as it is not way out of line, I can use Picasa to fix them either way. Cheers, David

I'm also fiddling with the Ev correction, but what I cannot understand is that, when I open the aperture to f8 or 5 or even less the exposure is good - and as I understand these things, it should be the other way around, the smaller the aperture the less light.

Daan, good question. I think it is probably some software programing issues with the internal JPEG processor of the Canon EOS cameras or the EOS AF lenses. Well, we just have to learn how to live with it. David

Now that I am slowly getting used to a digital camera I'm thinking of upgrading my 350D. One of my daughters has a Canon 450D and I'm looking at a 500D or something similar. Do you have a personal preference between Canon and Nikon?

davidcmc58 on July 28, 2010

Daan, I know nothing about Nikons as I am a life long Canon man. I am sure both brands will do just fine for you though. Having said that I do like my 500D a lot but I also like my 400D, G10, S40, A2E (film), A1 (film), my wife's SD890IS, my daughter's new G11, another daughter's SD850 and my son's SD750......Haha! I think you get the idea. Best regards,

Thanks David, you confirmed what I had in mind, about Canon. Apart from the Canon software on my PC, I also have a CanoScan 5600F for all my old photos and colour slides. I'm very nostalgic about my old Asahi Pentax (film) and its lenses I can't use anymore. But that's life. I'm happy that my three daughters and their husbands are keen photographers and among other things well-versed in IT, and one of my daughters is teaching me Photoshop! Cheers, Daan.
