Dear Paul,

Fulica atra australis is vegetarian, whereas Fulica atra in Europe eat tadpole, frogs, fish and fish eggs, snails and other molluscs. The third subspecies of Fulica atra, lives in the highland lakes of PNG but I don't know whether they follow their Australian cousins or their European cousins in regard to diet.

What do you know of the diet of the American coot?
