This is a great shot BnP.

Neat! It looks good with the foreground things in silhouette.

Norrel on June 24, 2010

The things are Night Herons, not1word, with some kind of bird sitting on them.

Thanks Conrad! And an extra special Thanks for discovering my shot almost as soon as I uploaded it! This is literally a 'new' spot, and there might be lots more sunset shots from here to come! This is on a dam between two lakes, and it used to be overgrown with trees, making it sort of creepy and dark. But they've just reconstructed the dam, opening the area up to some great views.

Thank you not1word and Norrel! Those are some of the silhouette thingies I carry around with me in my car to use as props! (In addition to there being more night herons just in that one click than I'd ever seen before in one place, the pilings they are sitting on are the remnants of an old icehouse, from when they'd harvest the lake ice in the winter to deliver to homes and businesses back before refrigerators. I remember my grandmother, who didn't live too far from here, still calling the refrigerator 'the icebox.'

Venturing away from Horn Pond Bits. Looks very pretty.

Thanks M! I sure am getting adventurous, aren't I? This lake is just a mile or two downstream. It's where the eagles were hanging out over the winter.

and LOL on me: I'd thought that this would be the scene every summer evening at the dam, but it turns out the large numbers of night herons were only that particular week, when the herring were running upstream to spawn. Now there's usually only one or two around.

Thanks so much for your Vote tu-quoque! The night herons only flocked top the lake in such numbers for a week or two, but they sure knew how to pose well!
