Information communicated to me by Omshakti: "There are but two great temples in Kanchipuram. Both were given their grand attributes (high compound walls and gopurams mostly) by Krishna Deva Raya, the great Vijayanagar emperor. Not only did he gift Kanchi but also Tirupati, Tirutani, Tiruvannalmalai, Chidambaram, Kumbakonam, Srirangam, Madurai, Rameswaram and Hampi... (many more I omit). This one is the Varadaraja Perumal (The Blessing Vishnu) seen from the main gate-tower (gopuram)".
