In my lay experience, this is probably the most widespread and hardiest of the Banksias. It will grow well in some quite hostile environments on coastal dunes, and becomes quite large in more protected environments as in this photo where it was the middle storey in the forests that have grown on the high dunes of Fraser island.
It is great to have a connoisseur of flora appreciating my flora gallery.

I tried to grow Banksia sp. from seed over here, but at most species I wasn't very successful. This was one of the easiest. It's very beautiful
