Cabrillo (Cabrilho) National Monument, in Point Loma, San Diego, California, USA, is a natural protected area managed by the US National Park Service. This monument celebrates the first European landing and discovery of California under the command of the Portuguese navigator João Rodrigues Cabrilho, on September 28, 1542. His name is often spelled Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo because he worked for the Spanish king and some people presuppose he was a Spaniard. Cabrilho was born in Montalegre, Portugal, where there is also a statue.
The present statue was made in Portugal and brought here by the Portuguese Navy in 1988, to replace the eroded original from 1939. In the statue and a few memorial inscriptions Cabilho’s name is written in Portuguese, but elsewhere is in Spanish spelling (Cabrillo). The top of the monument displays Portugal's coat of arms (national symbol), and a cross. 2006.Mar.07.
