The Dover Breakwater West End Light is located at the western end of the Southern Breakwater on the other side of the Western Entrance to the seaward end of the Admiralty Pier (which is where this photo was taken from at 1.10 pm on Thursday, 3rd of June 2010).

Dover Harbour is on the left and the English Channel on the right.

The Dover Breakwater West End Light is a 22 m (73 ft) round cast iron tower with lantern and gallery, painted white. It is active (in service) and has a focal plane of 21 m (69 ft). The light it emits when in use is red with one 3 second occultation every 30 seconds (ie it is continuously ON for 27 seconds, and then OFF for three seconds). The lighthouse was built in 1909. Operator: Dover Harbour Board. ARLHS ENG-294; Admiralty A0924; NGA 1272. (1) (2)

The writing on the lighthouse reads:

The reason for the warning is the the wreck of the Spanish Prince, a blockship scuttled in early 1915 during the First World War.

At the time of writing, the Waasland Sea Barge, the Gaverland Sea Barge, the Sarah Grey workboat, and the Haven Seafield flat top barge are all in Dover Harbour tasked with removing the wreck: click to see the wreck site which describes the Spanish Prince's orientation to the Dover Breakwater West End Light (also see the detailed multi-beam sonar image for an underwater view).

The lighthouse further down the breakwater is the Dover Breakwater Knuckle Light, separate photo not yet available.

For information on all things related to fishing see the Dover Sea Angling Association Southern Breakwater Forum (photo of DSAA Clubhouse).
