On June 25 and 26, 2010, two powerful thunderstorms rolled through the New Ulm, Minnesota area. The June 25 storm dropped large hail and heavy rain. Most of the hail was 1" (2.4cm) but there were a few pieces as large as 3" (7 cm). We spent much of the evening in a storm shelter as the tornado sirens were going off.
The June 26th storm was much more of a wind storm, with strightline winds close to 60 MPH (97 kph) with gusts to 66 mph (106 kph). Because the sirens never went off (there was a power failure), we were not in the storm shelter during the second storm, which could clearly have been a deadly mistake.
This managed to fall between the SUV and the camper. A few feet either way would have been bad.
