It's old and I'm pretty sure not accepting new burials. But Virginia City is mostly a tourist city now and the cemetery is crawling with visitors. Someone is keeping up the cemetery. On a later visit I saw that there was a new entrance and new trees -- I think this tree, as photogenic as it is, was cut down.

Gracias! I remember taking this same photo twice, once as a boy and this one when I returned as an adult. I'm sorry to say, though, that I discovered on a later visit that the tree is no longer there.

And in this case, I'd say that that the human setting has made nature's shapes a little eerie.

"interesting graveyard. is it abandoned?" Tell me this: How does a cemetery become abandoned?

Joe Gattuso, on November 3, 2011, said:

Greetings JBTHEMILKER. Thanks for inviting me to your group.

This graveyard is not abandoned as far as I know, nor is Virginia City a true ghost town. I don't know the precise definition of "ghost town" and I think it is considered to be that informally. The city's heydey was in the mid-1800s. When the silver ran out the population shrank, leaving behind I lot of empty buildings. As I remember there was still mining into the 1950s, even small scale mining through today, and the population never went to zero. I don't know if there ever was a time when this or nearby cemeteries were completely uncared for -- "abandoned." On a visit subsequent to my taking this photo I saw that the tree is this photo was gone and that a person or group had put in some new trees or shrubs and a new entrance gate. The cemetery is getting some care, even though I think that makes it less interesting photographically.
