What happened here? What does the air force base have to do with these abondened neighborhoods?

Kris Robinson on March 7, 2009

these are the houses that the Air Force built for the employees of the Base when it was active. they're are now abandoned, only a few near the edge of the neighborhood have been renovated.

What street of the Woodhaven housing area was this taken on? It looks like it was taken on Park Drive staring down Jupiter Lane. If you look at the garage that is half cut off on the right side of the pic, the house that would be attached to it, which you can't see, I think is one I used to live in. It is sad to see the area fall into such disrepair.

yeah zach, if you zoom in on the map that picture is looking down Jupiter. sorry i didnt get the whole house lol

Oh thats ok. I used to walk down the road the camera is looking down, to get to school. Any idea what they are going to do with those houses? It looks like they are being rehabbed. I dont live around there anymore but had read they were being torn down and the land used for some type of senior development.

We lived in this part of what used to be base housing from 1989-1993.I visited the area in the summer of 2010 it was very sad to see the housing look this way. I have so many good memories of the years we lived there. Now all the houses are empty,no more kids playing in the yards, they have even taken down the street signs.I had trouble even finding the house i used to live in. I hope they tear them down and put up something useful for the city of Rome.

Funny,I lived on Broadawy from 1962-1982...I remember going to school with kids that lived in these houses at Bell Rd School, now Clough Elementary...we went to birthdays partys here and just to play with the kids.I drive through this area 1 a year to my familys reunion. So sad how they are so broken down and unkept. They used to be beautiful homes.Instead of letting them get so horrible looking when they closed the base the government should have realized that those houses could bring income into Rome that they lost when the Base was closed.....they should have rented them out to people so they wouldnt have to be so bad looking or torn down, but alas, since the base closed the only people who are in Rome are the elderly and the ones who just cant get out because of family there.....They never should have closed that base,it killed Rome. It wasnt bad enough my grandfather had to give up his land and actually move his house off the property but they just left the bae empty and Rome with basicly no jobs or help.....The more I think about it,the madder I get.Leave it to the government!
