The bow of the DHB Dauntless is pointed towards the Western Entrance and English Channel where the MS Disney Magic cruise ship is manoeuvring into position prior to berthing at Cruise Terminal 2 on the Admiralty Pier of the Western Docks.

This Dover Harbour photo was taken at 5.54 am on Sunday, 18th of July 2010, from near the lighthouse end of the Prince of Wales Pier.

The long low building on the Admiralty Pier behind the tug is the Cruise Terminal 2 building. The area between the Admiralty Pier and the Prince of Wales Pier is the Inner Harbour, once called the Commercial Harbour.

A Dover Harbour Board webpage giving advice about Dover Port Control to arriving commercial shipping states:

Two Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tugs, the "DHB Dauntless" and "DHB Doughty", each with a bollard pull of 55 tonnes, (3,600kW) are available at one hour's notice for berthing in Dover. They operate over the bow with their own 80mm towing ropes, usually towing through the vessel's forward and aft centre leads. Please have at least two heaving lines of sufficient length to reach the tug, available forward and aft. The tugs are usually made fast once inside the harbour, although in fair weather it may be possible to make fast the aft tug before entry. The stern tug will be secured as soon as the vessel has come through the entrance and the bow tug will make fast once the vessel has almost stopped in the fairway to the south of the East Buoy.

And on departure:

...both tugs are let go before the vessel passes between the breakwaters, unless the vessel is proceeding stern first.

The tug was named DHB Dauntless on the 1st of June, 2000, "by Dover Harbour Board members Margaret Llewellyn (Chairman) and Cynthia Alers (non-executive director) for Barclays Mercantile Business Finance Ltd, manager DHB - Dover Harbour Board." (1)
