Hi May

There are many interested in the origin of Inn signs, and so I found this link…

The Story Behind The Name....

The inn is reputed to date back to the 1300s, although most of the existing fabric of the building dates from the 16th century. The inn was known as The Dog until 1875, when the squire of the village, who was also the Rector, had a pack of hounds. One day whilst out hunting, he and his party called at the inn for refreshments. Their drinking was disturbed by a loud and prolonged baying from the pack outside. High above the noise of the other hounds could be heard the squire's favourite dog, which prompted him to call out ....

"Hark to Bounty!"

Best wishes Peter

Dear Peter, thank you very much for your interesting information and the link! I feel honoured that you as someone of the country have it in your favourites. What a pretty story! I actually wondered what might be behind this sign, but didn't get round yet, to search for it. Usually they were closed, when I got there, besides I didn't want to waste my time in a dark room, while the countryside was calling me. :) I am always grateful for any additional informations.

I enjoyed my trip so much, loved the English countryside and the villages. I never get enough of it. I continued my journey up to the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria, before I left for Wales and the Southwest of England.

Thanks again and best wishes,

May
