Venetian fortress in Split: gates and tower (15th cent.)

The largest and best preserved medieval fortress tower in Split, built 1420-1435, one of the former five towers connected with defensive walls. Together they formed a maritime fortress with the Venetian military garrison to defend the city against possible attacks of the Ottoman navy and all other sorts of robbers from the sea. Twin tower on the left side of the fortress gates is preserved without the final upper part. Split was under Venetian rule from 1420 to 1797.
