A souvenir for David Ian Wilson
We had just taken dinner at Sherlock Holmes and received word Spain had taken the World Cup. As we were walking back to the hotel which was literally on the corner of Trafalgar Square, we noticed a couple of kids splashing around in one of the fountains on the square and were apparently very happy about something. As we walked over to get a closer look we began to notice more and more people celebrating. It took me a few minutes to realize they were celebrating Spain's victory. Soon there were about 20 kids in each of the square's fountains. I found this totally amazing!
We stuck around for about another hour and a half. I could not believe the droves of people that flooded Trafalgar Square that night! I have to guess there were appoximately 10,000 people in the square that night - it was elbow-to-elbow everywhere you looked! I don't believe another living soul could have gotten into either of the fountains - they were packed! It seemed like all of the statues were mounted with people.
We sat in our hotel lounge for another hour or so and went back into the square to find the party was still going strong ... really an amazing scene!
Very nice... letting it all hang out in Trafalgar Square - I recognised the statues immediately (took my first photo of one of those in 1967! still got it somewhere), and this is the usual location for an impromptu celebration. Ive been to a few myself. New years eve is usually a good one. And there are even a few nutters then, when the water is about 3 or 4C who will strip off and jump in. Hope all went well for the rest of your trip.
