The MV Cold Stream, accompanied by the out-of-shot DHB Dauntless tug, is shown waiting for the Norman Bridge cross-channel ferry to pass before leaving Dover Harbour through the Eastern Entrance (masts of the Norman Bridge can be seen projecting above the centre of the Cold Stream - as can smoke from the ferry's funnels!).

The pier behind the ship is the Eastern Arm (more info below).

This Dover Harbour zoomed photo was taken 1100 yards away from near the lighthouse end of the Prince of Wales Pier at 4.04 pm on Sunday, 18th of July 2010.

At the time of writing (28th of July), the Cold Stream is mid-Atlantic between Spain and the Caribbean Sea at N 31°00', W 043°12' on what appears to be a regular run at the moment: click to see the current position of the Cold Stream.

The Cold Stream is owned by Seatrade Reefer Chartering (offices: Antwerp, Belgium) who operate a variety of fully refrigerated vessels or “reefer vessels”, purpose-built ships for ocean transport of perishable and frozen cargo.

In 2005, for example, a press release (1) stated:

Seatrade Groningen has sealed a long-term charter deal with fruit shipper Geest at an all-time industry high. Brokers say the Netherlands-based company has achieved a record-breaking level of around $0.95 per cbf for 4 of its Santa-class reefers. The 463,000-cbf Santa Maria and Santa Lucia (both built 1999) and Santa Catharina (built 2000) are set to earn around $14,690 per day each in 2006, while the 456,700-cbf Cold Stream (built 1994) is set to garner around $14,465 per day. Brokers say the quartet have always commanded a premium because of the vessels' on-deck container capacity, which suits Geest's mixed-transport needs.

The contract has now ended (2), although a Geest Quotation Clauses webpage continues to state they can't accept bookings on the MV Cold Stream for the transport of horses (!).

In contrast to the Geest charter, Marinetraffic currently describe the Cold Stream's ship type as, "Cargo - Hazard A (Major)" (3).

Additionally, a US Coast Guard website (4) states:

The Oil Pollution Act of 1990 (OPA-90) and the international treaty, MARPOL 73/78, require owners/operators of certain vessels to prepare Vessel Response Plans (VRP) and/or Shipboard Oil Pollution Emergency Plans (SOPEP) approved by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Their Vessel Response Plan entry for the MV Cold Stream (5) describes the ship as a non-tank freight carrier with a double-bottomed, single-sided hull capable of carrying the following cargo types:

Group I Non-Persistent Oils

Group II Persistent Oils

Group III Persistent Oils

Group IV Persistent Oils

Who knows what might be in the containers in the photo, then!

Other comments:

The Eastern Arm pier running behind the Cold Stream juts out from the Eastern Docks (the cross-channel ferry terminal, out-of-shot to the left) which are located below the White Cliffs of Dover.

At the end of the Eastern Arm is the Eastern Entrance to the Straits of Dover and English Channel. The other side of Eastern Entrance is formed by the Southern Breakwater.

The strange-looking object on top of the cliffs on the left of the photo is the South Foreland Lighthouse (photo not yet available).

To the right of the ship is the crane of the Waasland Sea Barge, owned by Herbosch Kiere Marine Contractors, which is in Dover Harbour to remove the wreck of the Spanish Prince, a First World War blockship located near the Western Entrance (see the Spanish Prince wreck site and sonar image photos).

Also, another reefer ship called the Star Pride was in port two days earlier on Friday, 16th of July.

The Automatic Identification System (AIS) is an automatic tracking system used on ships and by vessel traffic services (VTS) for identifying and locating vessels by electronically exchanging data with other nearby ships and AIS Base stations.
