not a cistern- its an artesian well-fed spring. fine for drinking, although in the past 15 years or so, it has been drying up during the summer months.
cattle and pigs used to be driven by here seasonally to get them up to the grazing lands of mount laguna in the summer months when there is sparse vegetation in the pastures around potrero, and this was one of the main watering holes east of laguna. on the west side approaching laguna, the ellis spring rest stop near descanso served a similar purpose. of course, being on highway 80 meant the water was popular for drinking and topping off radiators, as well.
watch out for bees!!
